5. Neapolitan Songs (Due Sun Oct 9)

COMMENT

Which of the two songs:

1) had a deeper impact on you, emotionally?

2) helped you connect with the deep sense of the immigrants' nostalgia and lonesomeness?

  1. In my own personal feeling the song that made a close connection to me was the Lacrime Napoletane. The lyrics of the song gives me a feeling of melancholy feeling for the people who thought they would make big dreams in a America. One part of the lyrics goes "America cost me a lot of tears" I think this part of the song is very doleful because if I was to put myself in that position I would say the same as well. As I was reading lyrics and listening to the song the Italians went through disastrous time of their life and I feel that even though they were going through all the hardships they had no choice but to keep going.

    1. I'm 100% agree with you David and that's why I have to respect the Italians immigrant because even thought they had no choice but to keep going but they were very strong to be able to still move on when everyday of their life are getting worst. They manage to keep on going which said it all and show them that they are a strong member whose willing to fight. I felt that they are a strong leader who can conquer anything no matter what life throw at them immigrants or no immigrants.

  2. Although, both songs were very moving I would have to pick the santa lucia lontana. the lyrics seem to be description from memories. I notice that the lyrics are sharing a personal experience of one's childhood that seems very distant. I like looking back at the good moments in my life so I feel I relate to it in a strange way. I also liked the line from the lyrics that states, "Our hearts do not want wealth-" i believe in this idea which is why I appreciate it. Also the song mentions how when the moons rises why would they leave Naples. This lyric makes me imagine how beautiful it must be at night. The lyrics also mentions how far apart they are and so it seems to be a song about regrets. It must have been difficult to be in the position to have to abandon your life for a better opportunity but to realize that you didn't expect to become aware of how much you were losing or sacrificing.

  3. I felt that "Santa Lucia Lontana" had a deeper impact on me emotionally since it was a bittersweet song that praised the beauty of Naples while at the same time having a type of sad nostalgia for a place that you'll most likely never see again. Since I enjoyed the song more than "Lacrime Napoletane" (which was just too depressing for my tastes) than I was able to connect with it more.

  4. The song Lacrime Napoletane had a deeper impact on me as the depressing nature of the song allowed me to connect with the immigrant’s sense of loneliness and nostalgia. The lyrics of the song depicts the immigrant’s loneliness and nostalgia away from home and his mother as he states “I pretend that I am there with you.” This verse resonated with me as growing up children develop a deep connection with their mother and it she often becomes a source of comfort. When experiencing hardship or being away from home, you grow to miss the comfort of home and miss your family but at the heart of the family, you miss your mother who is often the center of your memories of home.

  5. I connected with “Lacrime Napoletane” the most out of the two songs. As I was reading the lyrics, I identified with them. To me the song showed a struggle between the between the need for money or for family/love. I'll never feel it to the extent that Italian immigrants did because my family is only a phone call away, but the song reminded me of the loneliness and sadness I feel while I work/go to school which makes me unable to see my family for long periods of time. I can't even begin to imagine how much worse it would feel if there was the chance of never seeing them again, or even just hearing their voices.

In my opinion the song “Lacrime Napoletane” has a lot more emotion in what was being sung; hence it had a deeper impact on me emotionally. As I was listening to the song I could hear the deep emotions in the singer’s voice. I can just imagine how immigrants of the time felt when boarding the boat to go to America. They were looking for new opportunity and a better life, to escape the current reality they lived in back home or simply to make money to provide for their families. When they arrived in America and saw how it was they must have been devastated to realize this is what they had left their homes for. It must have been even harder to bare the fact that they could not go back home, but that they had to stay to provide for those back home. The singer expresses this in the lyrics where his children cry for their mother to come home and he says that she may go, but he cannot. He has to stay behind to work so he could provide for his family. Through all the time of working in America everything dear to him which was his homeland, his home, and his honor has been lost. No matter how much money he may have he will always feel poor. He is nothing but fodder for the slaughterhouse because he is an immigrant.

  7. I was able to relate with the songwriter of "Santa Lucia Lontana" more. As an immigrant, the song reminded me of my own country. Listening to it felt like I was sharing the same longing expressed in the song. As the song was describing beautiful Naples, images of my own countries beauty flashed in my head. I was reminded of how long it has been since I last saw it. When the song mentioned about the farther someone strays away from Naples the more beautiful it becomes, I was reminded of how much appreciation I have now of my country that I have been away from it. And when the songwriter mentioned people traveling to find fortune elsewhere yet they still yearn for Naples, I thought of how my heart will always be identified with my country and have a deep attachment to it wherever in the world I may end up in. No matter where I am and what situation I am in, I will always belong to my motherland.

    1. i total agree and felt the same way about my country as you mention "i thought of how my heart will always be identified with my country and have a deep attachment to it where ever in the world i may end up" i felt the same way about my country as well and i learn to appreciate it more since i am far away.

  8. As i listen to both of the songs, i could relate emotionally to "Santa Lucia Lontana". The song started with a beautiful view of Naples, the blue sea, bright sky, the lights that surround the houses, which were well structured. The city was beautiful and peaceful, as it gives a warm and happy feeling from the different view and sight seeing with the transition from day to night. The fact that the city was lovely, the Italian people did not want to leave this wonderful place for America "their heart doesn't want wealth they want to die there" . This shows that in spite of the hard times they had in Naples they still wanted to stay there and enjoy the beauty of the city . This reminds me of when i migrated to the United States and i left my beautiful country with the warm sunshine all year around , just for a better opportunity of survival. At first it was hard to adjust and adapt to a different way of life, but eventually i had to do it. Therefore, this is the same way the Italian felt when they leave Naples.

  9. The song " Lacrime Napoletane", really had a strong emotional impact on me, because i felt like this song was about me. I actually was crying while i was litening to this song. I haven't being back to Africa in 10 years, and i haven't seen my mom in 10 years. This brought back emotions i have put away for years. i can relate, because the way he is explaining everything to his mom, thats the same way i call or, text my mom. telling her everything am going through. it like leaving your home to come some where else to suffer. it sucks, and it like you better of at home. atleast you know you around people that love you , and care bout you. this song makes me miss my mom, and my home so much. sometimes, i feel so alone, and like am missing a big part of me.

  10. I agree that both songs "Lacrime Neapolitan" and "Santa Lucia Lontana" have a big impact on me and people around me. The one that was most significant was Lacrime Neapolitan because I had a friend that was in a similar situation. While my friend was living in Haiti she fill for a visa and got a visa to come to New York. When my friend moved to New York, she never went back to visit her family in her country. While my friend was living in America the visa got expired and she was stuck in NY and could not go back home. The only way for her to travel back and forth from New York to Haiti was for her to marry someone who was a citizen and for her new husband to give her a green card. While Living in New York her mom passed away and she didn’t get to see her and go to her funeral. I can compare my friend story to be similar to the Neapolitan because my friend had the similar issues and feelings that the Neapolitan feel about not been able to see their family and stuck in a country where they treat so low because they have no paper. My friend was in hiding and could not go to Haiti to her mom funeral do to her visa expire. If my friend would have leave New York she would not be able to come back to America.
Though the song of the clips I could actually feel her pain not being able to go to the funeral of the person that gave birth to her. It was really a hard thing, and it's not easy seeing someone go through so much pain.

  11. Santa Lucia Lontana had more of an emotional affect on me, because what the song is talking about is leaving somewhere you love not because you want to, but because you have to. Having left places that I love and seeing certain things that remind me of it, is hard but I can only imagine leaving a place knowing that I will likely never return. This is the story of most immigrants, and it is a struggle that is expressed very well through this song. To me the song was describing how even though they were leaving their beloved country, the beauty would never be lost in their memory. To me the song is about pain and is expressive of the struggle of all immigrants who are coming to America for opportunity.

  12. I personally think that the song "santa lucia lontana" is more powerful and emotional than the the other one and I really agreed with the lyrics. Christmas is one of the biggest holiday and all families get together to celebrate it. But, people who immigrated and live alone, it would be one of the worst holiday for them and feel nostalgic. I am an independent in the United States, so I also know how sorrowful that is. So I personally perfer the santa lucia lontana song.
